Mary Cowhey brings a story on issues surrounding family diversity, specifically on same sex parenting homes. This can be a bit of controversial topic in elementary schools and even middle schools and as a result many teachers shy away from it. Cowhey discusses how it’s important to not just assume that students are coming from households of two heterosexual parents, otherwise it can place that student in the realm of the ‘other’. Doing studies on gender stereotypes in class is also a good lead into understanding and discussing same sex households. Even little things like replacing the phrase “mom and dads” with “parents or guardian” can do a lot to prevent a curriculum that is exclusionary.
